What are CATPart and CATProduct Files?

  • Files with the file extension CATPart and CATProduct are native 3D files of the CAD/CAM software CATIA V5.
  • CATParts and CATProducts either come directly from CATIA V5, are exported from CATIA V6 (3DEXPERIENCE) or were created with converters such as 3D-Evolution.
  • CATPart is the part file format and contains 3D geometries, sometimes also product manufacturing information (PMI)
  • CATProduct is the assembly file format and is linked to at least one, but usually several, CATParts and often other CATProducts.
  • CATProducts with all parts are occasionally exported to a single CATPart for data exchange. These then usually have the term AllCatPart in the file name.

CATPart and CATProduct Versions

New releases of CATIA V5 and V6 are published regularly. The releases have the designations V5R1 to V5R21 and from 2013 with the release of CATIA V6 then V5-6R2013, V5-6R2014 to currently V5-6R2025. (06/2025)

File versions created with newer releases cannot be opened with old releases unless the files were explicitly exported for an older CATIA release.

In 1977, CATIA was one of the first CAD/CAM programs in the world, however CATParts and CATProducts have only been available since 1999 with CATIA V5. The predecessor CATIA V4 used model files, some of which are still in circulation.

Additional Native CATIA File Formats

  • cgr (CATIA Graphical Representation) CATIA file format with solely graphical 3D data for lean visualization of designs
  • 3dxml Original 3D visualization data for example for the free 3DXML player. Since CATIA V6, as native 3DEXPERIENCE file, a complex archive for data exchange, consisting of visualization and exact CAD data, materials, assemblies, parts, macros, etc.
  • CATDrawing Native 2D drawing from CATIA, derived from CATParts or CATProducts
  • model File format of CATIA V4, which was released in 1993. Model files are only used occasionally today and can contain 3D models and 2D drawings.

How Do I Open CATIA CATProduct and CATPart Files?

Typically, CATIA CAD/CAM software from Dassault Systems is used for this. It is also possible to open with CAD/CAM software that has a CATIA interface.

How Do I Convert CATIA CATPart and CATProduct Files?

If you do not have CAD software with a CATIA interface, the design must be exported from CATIA to a common 3D exchange format, such as STEP.

Converting CATProduct and CATPart to STEP is also possible with a 3D converter or CAD converter.
